GTA 6 May Require PS5 Firmware 14.10 at Launch — What It Means for Your Console
A datamine says GTA 6's PS5 build needs system software 14.10.00.00 — bad news for anyone on a jailbroken console. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and what to do before November 19.
If you are planning to play Grand Theft Auto 6 on PlayStation 5 at launch, check which system software your console is running. According to a datamine reported this week, you may need to be on firmware 14.10.00.00 — and for a small slice of players, that is a genuine problem.
The claim comes from PlayStation Game Size, a datamining account that digs through PlayStation Store and system data. In an October 2 post, it reported that the GTA 6 build slated for the November 19 release lists 14.10.00.00 as its minimum system software. Notebookcheck picked up the report on October 3, and gaming outlets including TalkEsport and TrendzBetaGames followed over the weekend. One important label up front: neither Rockstar nor Sony has confirmed the requirement. Treat this as a credible report, not an official announcement.
The timeline is what gives the story teeth. Firmware 14.00 arrived on September 16 and broke the Relapse exploit, which used a flaw in the PS5's web browser to gain kernel-level access. Roughly two weeks later, 14.10 followed with further security fixes. Public jailbreak support currently stops at firmware 13.60, and as of October 4 there is no public exploit for 14.10.
That leaves jailbroken-console owners in a bind with no good answer: update to 14.10 and lose the jailbreak, or stay put and have GTA 6 refuse to boot. For everyone else, the requirement is a non-event. Consoles connected to the internet will simply install the update as part of normal operation, and offline consoles can update by USB drive or directly from the game disc.
Is Rockstar deliberately blocking jailbreaks? Nobody has said so, and the honest answer is that we cannot know from this report. Big games routinely ship with a recent firmware floor because they are built on newer versions of Sony's developer kit — that alone can set the minimum, whether or not anyone at Rockstar or Sony planned a piracy blockade. But the practical effect is the same either way: one of the largest launches of 2026 closes the easiest day-one piracy route on PlayStation, intentionally or not.
What to do before November 19: if your PS5 is online, nothing — keep automatic updates on and the firmware will be in place well before pre-loading begins on November 12. If you play offline, grab the 14.10 update on a USB drive ahead of time so launch night is not spent downloading system software. And if you are jailbroken on 13.60 or below, decide now which matters more — the jailbreak or GTA 6 at launch — because this report says you cannot have both.
Grand Theft Auto 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
