Rockstar Says Finishing GTA 6's Story Won't Take You Everywhere — And That's the Point

GTA 6's map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's. Rockstar says the story was never meant to cover all of it — the rest is yours to find.

Here is a sentence that tells you how big Grand Theft Auto 6 really is: you can finish the entire story and still not have seen all of it.

That is not speculation. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, said exactly that to Game Informer for its GTA 6 cover story, which arrived this week with 12 new screenshots of the game's fictional Florida. The campaign, he said, does not have time to take players everywhere in Leonida — the state's six regions, its cultures and its atmosphere. Instead it is designed to give players a feel for most of them, with the rest deliberately left for players to discover on their own.

It is a telling design statement. Rockstar North's Aaron Garbut describes Leonida as the largest world the studio has built “by some degree,” at roughly double the area of GTA 5's Los Santos and Blaine County. The state is divided into six regions: Vice City, modeled on Miami; the Leonida Keys; Grassrivers, based on the Everglades; Port Gellhorn, standing in for Florida's struggling tourist-trap towns; Ambrosia, the manufacturing city; and Mount Kalaga National Park up by the fictional Florida-Georgia line.

The new screenshots offer glimpses of that scale. One shows Jason being pursued by members of the First Chapter, a motorcycle gang based in Ambrosia; another shows the interior of The Thirsty Wolf, a biker bar that appears to serve as one of the gang's hangouts. Rockstar also confirmed wider body types, detailed skin features like sunburn, tanning and moles, and localized weight gain for the protagonists.

The world-building details go well beyond the scenery. The game features more than 170 animal species — over 60 kinds of birds, more than 30 land mammals — including alligators, manatees, flamingos, sharks, whales and macaques, grouped into rare, discoverable and legendary categories. The weather is localized and dynamic: wind moves hair and debris on rooftops, water ripples, grass bends in the swamps, and tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed, though Rockstar has not said how often they occur or whether they affect missions.

Activities run from hunting, fishing and scuba diving to mini golf, billiards and visits to the zoo. And fast travel has a Florida flavor: RydeMe, an in-game ride-hailing app, ferries you across the state while you change the radio, browse social media or talk to the driver.

Even the relationship between protagonists Jason and Lucia bends to player choice — it can develop along romantic or platonic lines depending on what the player does.

The throughline of the Game Informer coverage is confidence in density over distance. Rockstar's argument is that a map twice the size of GTA 5 is not worth much if the story drags you through all of it by force. The parts it shows you are the tour; the parts it doesn't are the game.

Grand Theft Auto 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
