Rockstar Is Prepping GTA 6's Regional Editions — and Some Countries Can't Pre-Order at All

Rockstar's updated store and support pages spell out the regional fine print: PS5 codes are region-locked, Japanese codes expire 170 days after issue, Xbox codes aren't locked — and some Middle Eastern countries can't pre-order at all.

Rockstar Games is quietly getting its logistics in order for November 19 — and the fine print reveals that not every country is getting the same GTA 6.

The first sign is new: Rockstar's store now lists regional SKU codes for the game. Some fans have speculated this could mean content cuts in certain regions, but that reading is likely wrong — Rockstar more plausibly needs the codes to meet regional rules on product descriptions and packaging. What the listing does confirm is more mundane but reassuring: the company is gearing up to fulfill pre-orders on time for launch day.

The second sign is older but worth understanding if you buy boxed copies: Rockstar's own support page spells out that GTA 6 download codes on PS5 are region-locked. A boxed copy bought in the UK must be redeemed through a UK PlayStation account — you can't redeem it through a Hungary-registered account, for example. The locked regions include the UK, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and North America. Importing a boxed edition from another country, or receiving one as a gift from abroad, could leave you holding a code that simply won't work — and digital codes are much harder to return or resell than an unopened disc.

Japan has the strictest rules of all. Rockstar's page confirms that Japanese PS5 codes expire 170 days after they're issued — buy at launch on November 19 and you have until early May 2027 to redeem, or the code dies. The reason is Japan's Payment Services Act: companies selling prepaid codes must register and post a large financial deposit with the government to protect consumers — unless their codes expire within six months. Rockstar chose the 170-day expiry to stay under that line, which is why the deadline exists. One nuance to note: this rule surfaced in July reporting, so it's not new — what's fresh is Rockstar's updated store and support pages now confirming it directly.

Xbox buyers are spared the territorial headache: Rockstar explicitly states that Xbox codes are not region-locked.

Finally, the genuinely new and sharpest restriction: Rockstar's store now states that in some areas, pre-orders aren't allowed at all, citing "platform policies, regional regulations, and age ratings." Several Middle Eastern nations are the current exceptions. The game is otherwise widely available to pre-order — but if you're in one of the restricted markets, there's currently no official route to reserve your copy.

The takeaway for buyers: the days of grabbing any boxed copy from anywhere are over for this launch. Check that your region's code matches your PlayStation account, don't import from another country unless you know the rules, and if you're buying in Japan — redeem that code before spring.
