Typhoon Dujuan Cuts Tokyo Game Show 2026 Short: PlayStation's GTA 6 Theater Goes Dark a Day Early
Tokyo Game Show 2026's historic first five-day edition lost its final day to Typhoon Dujuan, with PlayStation canceling its September 21 demos and streams — including its big-screen GTA 6 Extended Look screenings with real-world effects.
The longest Tokyo Game Show in history just got a day shorter. Organizers canceled the entire Monday, September 21 program of TGS 2026 as Typhoon Dujuan — the 25th named typhoon of 2026 — bore down on the Kanto region, taking PlayStation's showpiece GTA 6 screenings with it.
What was canceled
The Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) announced the cancellation on September 19. The show's 30th anniversary edition was supposed to be its first-ever five-day run, September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, under the slogan "The Longest Ever, 5 DAYS Filled with Games." Business days ran the 17th and 18th, public days the 19th and 20th — and that was it. The cancellation effectively shortens the historic edition back to four days.
The call came down to safety and transportation. Typhoon No. 25 is expected to approach the Izu Islands and the Kanto region on September 21, with winds that could reach up to 78 mph and nearly 16 inches of rain forecast for the Tokyo region. Nippon Airways canceled flights across the region, and East Japan Railway suspended service on some lines. CESA said rain and wind were expected to intensify after the afternoon of September 21, making it potentially impossible for attendees, exhibitors, and staff to get home. Ticket holders for the 21st will be refunded through their original vendors.
The GTA 6 theater goes dark
PlayStation confirmed separately on X that its September 21 hands-on demos and streaming events were off too: "We regret to inform everyone who was looking forward to it, but we kindly ask for your understanding." That included the PlayStation booth's large-screen screenings of the GTA 6: An Extended Look trailer, enhanced with real-world special effects to match the footage. The screenings were showing the same Extended Look footage released in August — there were no new reveals on the schedule — but the theater had been one of the show's biggest draws, and it went dark a full day early.
Sunday, September 20 went ahead as the show's final physical day, with organizers warning that individual attractions could still be modified or canceled depending on conditions. Some stage programming may move online if the weather allows.
With 59 days until GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the typhoon at least spared the part of the show that mattered most: the footage it was screening is the same footage everyone already has.
